Yes, in that regard, it is like war. There the similarity ends.

I started a discussion here early Wednesday with a couple of questions about just what this thing is that we're dealing with. It doesn't fit neatly into any of the paradigms we're accustomed to.

After considerable thought, I came to the conclusion that it is, after all, a war partly for the reason you cite. Another key consideration, I think, for what bucket you stick it in is how you would handle the perpetrators. Do we get a warrant, handcuff them and put them on trial? Or do we blow in and blow them up? I think it's the latter.

I don't think it's practical to make up a new label each time we come upon something that doesn't fit neatly into the familiar framework. Despite the fact that the enemy isn't a country, I'm comfortable that this is much more like a war than it is like anything else and that the differences between it and war are not significant.

So, on Wednesday I started calling it a war.

There are deaths caused by those generally outside our country. Yes, in that regard, it is like war. There the similarity ends.

Hardly.

And welcome to the 21st Century.
