Steven O - I too am from the UK now Canadian. The only thing I would comment on is your assertion that it was left wing liberals who were for appeasement - on the contrary it was across party lines - Chamberlain had the hopes of a nation behind him when he met Hitler.

Even after Churchill became PM he had to contend with members of his own Cabinet like Halifax who wanted to deal, behind his back, with Hitler.

As regards Bin Laden, his punishment could be being thrown from the Empire State Building.

Interesting thought but nothing new.
In WWII, somewhere in N. Africa, A Muslim cleric was trussed up by some Italian colonial masters in front of a mosque in full view of his brethren. The Italians then challenged their Allah to save him. They put him in a small plane, flew high directly above the mosque and as they threw him over they told him, "Now let's see if your Allah that you always intone is so great can save you."

You can imagine what unspeakable hatred such humilation engendered for the Italian colonial masters. Well, the rest is history.
