So the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the ensuing power vacuum had nothing to do with it? 120 years ago the Russians were impaling people on pikes. These are repeating patterns of geopolitical stability and social attitudes in a troubled part of the world. The Mid-East is very similar to the Balkans, but has more years behind it and more factions.
