I believe you are wrong about Margaret Chase Smith. She became the first female Senator after WWII when she replaced her deceased husband as a Senator from Maine. I do not recall her ever having been a U.S. Representative. But, my memory is not what it once was! (By the way, according to my wife, my memory never was what it once was<VBG>).

To the best of my memory it was some very liberal politico, perhaps from a small splinter party.
