Depending on the hazard, winds aloft could be more important than surface winds. They are often not the same.

you can also walk outside, throw a few pieces of grass in the air and observe the direction it goes

I usually go on my deck and smoke a cigarette. The smoke tells me which way the wind is blowing.

which direction to go and which highways to use..

UW, is there a reason why one might not consider going perpendicular to the wind direction ? If one goes in the direction of the wind, is one just waiting for it to catch up ?
