I'm having a parallel experience to you.

However, I have been affected a lot by these events, it is a little hard in Australia where life seems to have returned to normal after one day or so... Anyway, Australians are a skeptical bunch at the best of times. But I identify a lot more with America than most Australians would. For most people it is just this imaginary place they see on TV, of course I have other colleagues and friends here who have lived in the US as well (but I don't think any of them planned on staying - I just could get the right job to keep my visa within the time I had) and all my colleagues have been there.
