The only reason they would comdemn this is that they despise the Taliban. If not for that, you'd see a glowing justification for these acts as the fruits of (imagined) US oppression.

Re <<do you think they are serious (Iran) or is this simply a "hey, don't look at me (wink, wink)"?>>

I think they are serious. Make no mistake though; Iran continues to be adamantly against US foreign policy, specially its support for Israel.

Regrettably I do believe that Iran's show of outrage from the hard-line faction has some to due with their hatred for the Taliban and Iraq. Iran almost got into arm confrontation with the Taliban in 1999 and of course fought Iraq in a very bloody war. Regardless of what most Moslem want to believe, sonny side (Taliban and Iraq) and Shiite side (Iran) do not get along.

Iran fought a bitter war with Iraq in the 80's which 1,200,000 Iranians died (although it is debatable what the exact number is). It almost wiped out a entire generation of young male adult between 16 to 26 years of age. Iranian (including I) to this day believe that U.S. was very much supporting Iraq toward the end of that war. This is the main point of resentment toward the US for an average young adult in Iran.

Iranian 60 seconds of silence before the world cup qualifying soccer match 2 days ago was very indicative that the average Iranian is also very much saddened by what has happened.
