Local daily The News reported on Sunday from Peshawar, which borders Afghanistan that the accounts were frozen following a circular issued by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Saturday to the banks to hold up the accounts of some 300 important Afghan nationals until further orders. Quoting top banking sources, it said the freezing of bank accounts of the Afghan nationals, particularly those in the high positions, was the first step taken by the Musharraf administration as part of its commitment to cooperate with US in fight against terrorism. It said most of the names in the list provided by SBP to the scheduled banks are the leaders of Taliban administration. The SBP has provided a list of names, which include some ministers of the Taliban establishment and former ministers and war commanders to all the branches of the scheduled banks. The decision, it said, appeared to have been taken in the backdrop of US charter of demands presented to the Pakistani government to deal with Taliban following Tuesday's bomb attacks in Washington and New York, it said. The newspaper also reported that a local official of the SBP, however, said he was not aware of any such action. "It might have been decided in late hours. Till now I have no information about any order," he was quoted as saying by the newspaper. timesofindia.com
