Diana! Absolutely fabulous to hear from you. So if Stratfor knows that, maybe the US intelligence community does too. Maybe all this build up over OBL is diversionary?

Probably a lot of news coming through the press is disinformation these days, as the sides try to cloak and mask intentions.

Diana,

My battle cry is going to be, in this new kind of war, that we will need to embrace Islam to defeat Islamic terrorism. The WSJ (Shelby Steele) had an editorial today that was so obvious it was not funny. This fight is flamed by 3rd world impotence and 1st world guilt. I have the paper version, perhaps someone can post a bit of the electronic version.

Since I am a dim bulb on my best days I need to reason through complex topics by analogy. Let's say this is WWII (or Communism) and Islamic Terrorism is the National Socialists (or the Politburo). Our goal should not necessarily be to seek out and exterminate every single Islamic Terrorist (the 19 directly responsible for 9/11/01 are already cremated at 3,000 degrees), but rather to seek out and exterminate Islamic Terrorism. The analogy is that we were not that interested in seeking out and gunning down every Nazi soldier (or Japanese pilot who took part in Pearl Harbor), but were absolutely focussed on unconditional surrender of the German and Japanese governments, and the concomitant destruction of German fascism and Japanese state imperialism/militarism. Once that was accomplished we not only saved the world from Hitler and Japanese militarism, but saved the German people and the Japanese people from them as well.

Does anyone doubt that the true victors in the Cold War were the peoples of Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Russia? Yes, the former Yugoslavia is troubled, and its parts may one day find peace and happiness, as may or may not the Islamic republics of the former USSR. But the end of the Cold War meant freedom and self-determination for about 400 million people. Most have not chosen to start shooting each other, some have.

Our goal will be, should be, must be, to rescue the world from Islamic terrorism and at the same time rescue Islamic nations and Islam from Islamic terrorism. Citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan now live in a hell which makes North Korea look like a resort area.

Having spouted all this stuff, however, I'm at least smart enough to know it will take an incredible effort on the part of many nations to accomplish this, that a lot of things will have to happen behind the scenes and that we will have to give up some things we would have whined incessantly about just 8 days ago (national identity cards, certain civil liberties) during and perhaps even after the war effort here in our homeland. The question is, will we submit to more security and restrictions from the state, or will we be forced to submit to such restrictions as terrorists seek to impose? Do you prefer to register yourself and your address on a national identity card, or do you prefer to give in to terrorists in terms of where you choose to live and work? As precious as freedom is (and I'm not sure that carrying an identity card would really restrict my freedom, since carrying a driver's license doesn't seem to) my safety and the safety of my wife, my children, my friends and associates, and my coutrymen, is much more precious.

dianag, You are correct. That is why I supect direct Taliban involvement in the planning and carrying out of the attacks-Time and evidence will tell. I am assuming that they have skipped Israel as a major target because of the "Solomon Plan"....
