My only knowledge of this subject comes from a lengthy piece written by David Friedman (Milton's son) a few years ago.

He indicated there were no Kings, only Chieftans who were appointed. So we had a land that was ruled by people who didn't necessarily want the job.

Settlers came from all over northern Europe, but most were probably Norse. The period following the first settlement produced great literature and good vibes generally prevailed. After about 300 years waves of Vikings came and there were disputes over land claims and other controversies. The idyllic society probably degenerated into civil war.
