A market bottom may be near. The Vix has not been this high since Oct of '98 if I am not mistaken.

Taiwan foundries unaffected by deadly typhoon

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan is recovering from the worst typhoon to hit the northern part of the island in more than a decade. The storm ravaged the capital, Taipei, causing severe flooding and power outages. So far, 25 people are dead and 94 injured.

Despite the severity of the storm, operations continued normally at the island's two major foundries, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and United Microelectronics Corp. Both are headquartered in the Hsinchu Science Park and have operations in the Tainan Science Park, which was spared the brunt of the storm on Monday (Sept. 17).

Officials shut down schools and businesses in northern Taiwan on Monday and said they would do the same Tuesday. Events during the first day of SEMI Taiwan were cancelled, but the trade show will continue as scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said.

Hi Mark,

Sounds like the sky gods are angry over there. CA is bright and sunny and the market looks OK, as long as you're not into airline and hotel stocks.

Wireless is looking great this morning. NOK up over 10%. RFMD up over 5%. Got lucky there. Looks like everyone now wants one to call home in an emergency and bin Laden needs one a day to keep his phone from being tapped. Issue will be sustainability and whether this sector is a big enough consumer of chips to be a chip equipment driver?

Big perception shift in the field of security. I'm buying VRSN.

I'm seeing some glimmer of a silver lining and expect to see some easing on the antitrust front to help the airlines. They're taking 40% hits today amid the bankruptcy and liability talk. Congress is resisting aid package at least until airline exec salaries share the pain. I think the liability thing is a paper tiger and don't see people losing their stomach for speedy travel. The big uncertainty for me is determining whether all the additional security measures result in a significant increase in idle time for craft, because as Kelleher knows so well, that makes so much difference between profitability and loss. I know it's early but I am getting ready to start nibbling.

Cheers,
Sam
