Attacks Spark Gold Rush

Gold does better as an investment in uncertain times, and now is no exception. The U.S. Mint sold 10 times more gold coins than usual in the two weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, "well over 60,000" coins, BusinessWeek reports in its Oct. 15 issue.

Most of the demand comes from wealthy investors as a hedge, the magazine says, but survivalists, a "somewhat older crowd living mostly in Western states ... intent on being self-sufficient if the U.S. government collapses," also account for the increased demand.
