good analogy and on target, IMO. I don't know how much patriotic buying is going on, but I would expect that foreign holders and institutions are selling into it.

The type of folks who we've seen spouting all this nonsense on the boards -- short-sellers are evil, yada, yada, yada -- just don't wanna be bothered about that structural stuff. They don't even seem to know that short-sellers can't drive markets down.

I expect them to get lots more vitreolic in the next few weeks. Despite all that has happened in the economy -- denial continues. Makes you wonder what is going to happen when they give up.

absolutely correct. note, the people telling us that everything's safe do so because they mainly fear for their own positions. and as you say, their advice so far during the bear market was worth less than nothing.

one more thing regarding patriotism: it's an emotion i don't entirely trust anyway, and it sure makes for an extremely poor reason to risk capital in the market.
