That's true. But if the public reacts by fear of flying and also to the inconvenience of airport time tacked onto short trips, it may become the mode of transport that is preferred. A high speed rail line to St. Louis, hurtling across the nearly flat landscape, would take maybe three hours. The London to Paris trip is the same distance, and it takes three hours even though the UK part is not high speed.
