Possible Involvement in Markets
By Terrorists Is Being Probed
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

WASHINGTON -- Securities regulators began investigating whether terrorists tried to profit from last week's attacks by short-selling stocks likely to be affected. Also, the Treasury Department moved to cut off terrorists' financial supply lines in the U.S.
"We've heard those reports about terrorist involvement in our markets," said Harvey Pitt, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. "Our enforcement division has been looking into a variety of market actions that could be linked to these terrible acts including the subjects of the rumors."

The SEC received information from various U.S. agencies Friday about "possible trading by terrorists in industries affected by the bombing, including insurance and the airlines," a person close to the investigation said. "We also heard they may have bought put options or futures indexes."
