Why is cutting back 20% in airline flights a step in the right direction? Why is reduced competition in a particular industry a step in the right direction? Why is more expensive airline tickets a step in the right direction? Why is being forced into buying a smaller car a step in the right direction? Who are the wisemen appointed themselves to decide for all us peasants how we should live? What if I am the wiseman, and I decide that Americans are consuming too many calories in their diet and it would be a step in the right direction to issue food coupons to control how much each individual can eat and exercise (which burns calories)?

John, this is not intended to offend you. It just amazes me how many of my liberal minded friends (I do mean friends) who otherwise share my civil libertarian outlook on other issues get all worked up on energy, which is cheaper than any substance given sufficient technology level (remember, E=MC^2?). Where is this energy conservation worship coming from? Is it more important to conserve the sacresanct energy deity than respect individual choice?

Jim
ps.
I do turn off lights, and drive relatively energy efficient cars myself; my point is individual choice; why would anyone celebrate when someone else is being forced into choosing something less than his/her heart's desire due to some artificial restrictions? Should we admire Taliban's ban on TV; after all, what a waste of energy that is, according to some wisemen.
