Please do some reading in foreign policy. I just posted a Jane's Defence article on Voltaire's porch--please go look at that. How the he** would YOU know what is in Bin Laden's mind? He also bombed the Cole, and embassies. And by the way it is not just him alone. Go look at American complicity in the whole situation. It is very complex. And today was not such a disaster. Geez. No offense but this is the kind of talk that the world can't stand from Americans.

It is the engine that has fueled, and continues to fuel, the oppression of their people. although I agree they relished the financial disruption the devastation would cause, I believe the primary motivator was the opportunity to strike at the symbolic heart of the western capitalist society which is perceived as a cultural enemy by radical Muslims. Bernard Lewis succinctly expresses this in The Roots of Muslim Rage : "For a long time now there has been a rising tide of rebellion against this Western paramountcy, and a desire to reassert Muslim values and restore Muslim greatness. The Muslim has suffered successive stages of defeat. The first was his loss of domination in the world, to the advancing power of Russia and the West. The second was the undermining of his authority in his own country, through an invasion of foreign ideas and laws and ways of life and sometimes even foreign rulers or settlers, and the enfranchisement of native non-Muslim elements. The third -- the last straw -- was the challenge to his mastery in his own house, from emancipated women and rebellious children. It was too much to endure, and the outbreak of rage against these alien, infidel, and incomprehensible forces that had subverted his dominance, disrupted his society, and finally violated the sanctuary of his home was inevitable. This civilization and country has been attacked in the most cowardly, insidious and murderous manner. We will protect our civilization, our country and our lives. The primary point here is that this must never ever never happen again. All the rest, 'denying victory' etc is pure crap. There is probably a measure of revenge element in there too, I realize that, but it in no way obscures or alters what our armies, agencies, government will do. We elect them to protect and provide security. they get paid for that. They said they will do it, and I trust that they will see that it never happens again. Whoever the culprit is (I think we are closing in) will be caught, and any parties who gets in the way, or provides shelter to the culprit goes down with him. That's all there is to it. Just watch it happen.
