If you are a 'regular,' ie frequent, Blockbuster customer... ...which your membership card instantly reveals at the touch of a keystroke at the cash register, your story may indeed 'be bought' by the management and your money would cheerfully be refunded or whatever. Business operates on another unique? 'American' capitalistic principle, which is that most people are inherently honest. It's the 'trust' thing i.e. innocent until proven guilty ... but in business, the write-offs of those who aren't is simply an expected, normal cost of extending credit.
