i fully agree with everything you say, safe for one point: the supposedly greater understanding of our modern day economists. if one looks at mainstream economic commentary on Japan for example, i can't detect even a faint trace of understanding the issues at hand. they all, with almost no exception, continue to preach intervention (monetary and fiscal) in a sort of monetarist-Keynesian mishmash, which is precisely the method that has demonstrably & utterly failed for 12 years running!

what will it take? do we have to hit them over the head with something?

you may have noticed that while Greenboink's nimbus is fading somewhat of late (no surprise, at least not to me), faith in the Fed's bureaucratic ability to 'fix' the economy and market is still on the level of fundamentalist religious fervor in the economic community. they have it so completely bass-ackwards that i don't even know where to begin...
