tekboy,

I didn't see anything in cTM-H's posts that merited the extremely snippy (as opposed to joshingly curmudgeonly) tone some of the recent posts here have taken...

I didn't see anything in Thomas's posts that were either joshing or curmudgeonly. Therefore, it was appropriate to respond uncurmudgeonly and with a serious tone comensurate with his serious tone, that is unless you're applying a double standard which I don't think is the case.

It's obvious that Bush has not been as compelling a leader during recent days as, for example, Rudy Giuliani

That's not obvious to me. I think comparing their tasks at hand is like comparing apples and oranges. It's understandable at least to me that their leadership will be manifested in different ways.

It also seems clear, from the press coverage, that Cheney has been playing a huge role in WH decisionmaking...

Thank goodness! He is the #2 guy. I certainly hope he's playing a huge role. He has more experience at this sort of stuff than the #1 guy, which is presumably part of the reason the #2 guy was selected by the #1 guy. I don't find any fault with Bush for surrounding himself with people whose decision-making process and advice he trusts. Just the opposite, I believe that's the mark of a leader.

When you mention "WH decisionmaking," the guy sitting in the oval office is the one we hold accountable. In the end, he's the guy making the decisions.

some skepticism about dubyah's personal performance in all of this would seem entirely legitimate, if that's what one's own observations lead to

True. And that being the case, some skepticism about Thomas's personal performance in all of his reaction to it would seem entirely legitimate, just as you've legitimately expressed skepticism about my personal performance. I'm very skeptical of Thomas's powers of observation based on what he's written in the folder.

However, I don't want anyone to think I was trying to be snippy. I wasn't. And I don't think they were snippy. But that depends on how each of us measures "snippy."

it seems to me that the terrorists have pulled a Shannon and managed to get your goat...

Thank you for the compliment, though such compliments are very uncurmudgeonly of you.
