Now you assume that I believe in any of these orthodox religions rather than just trying to state what I think their adherents believe...

I find it harder to understand Christianity than to understand Judaism and Islam, perhaps because of my cultural background. It doesn't mean I subscribe to the orthodox view of Judaism. That's your assumption. Proof that I'd don't is that I'm sending you this message today.

But the fact is that Islam, Christianity, and Judaism claim to be versions of the same religion, whatever sense that makes. Buddhism is a similar derivative of Hinduism.

Why argue with the MC, Mq? There can be no winner in the debate because there is no proof either way. Enlightened tolerance is the only answer, unless some religious nut has a gun to my head.

All religions try to answer the "Big Why", i.e., the reason for our existence, in the context of an evolutionary imperative. Science in the form of physics, cosmology, quantum mechanics, mathematics, biochemistry, string and superstring theory, etc., tries to answer the "Big How", questions which religion cannot touch. In fact, many of the proven answers are an anathema to believers.

Evolution comes into play because religion channels the evolutionary drive to advance a group's DNA. Distinguish between the heathen and the saintly, then kill the heathen so my genes will progress. Evolution is always the backdrop, lurking silently.

Answer the "Big How" and there might be a slim chance that the "Big Why" might become comprehensible. The "Big How" in my view is likely to be all there is.

In the meantime, tolerate those who seek their answers so long as they do so peacefully. Nothing wrong with harmless superstitions, especially if they promote good behavior.

Hi maurice,
To have the earth orbit around the few true believers of whichever brand is more absurd. Here we agree totally.

t's nice to pretend the superstitious are all one happy family believing that there is one Santa in the sky
It's a common misguided point to be showing that it is somehow more absurd for Christian to kill Muslim to kill Jew than for say Christian to kill Hindu, because they share a common religious heritage. But that absurdity never ends, Catholic versus Protestant, Shi'ite versus Sunni, Muslim versus Hindu........Maybe that last ones ok, no religious heritage conflict.

with marauding proponents of the competing manias still murdering on a daily basis in the name of their wacky superstitions
That's what happens when people don't get (or choose to ignore) the main point and focus instead on trivial details which can be bent to almost any conviction.

I bet the devil has hold of me and it can be exorcized with help from a hammer.
LOL Watch out for Trini Lopez - If I had a Hammer.........

Though I do like the idea of burning a few witches at the stake which I hear was a popular Catholic past time; I should undergo a conversion
Oooooooooooh ! you can be so deliciously nasty LOL
