Douglas MacArthur escaped from the Phillippines in a small PT boat just days before the Corrigidor garrison surrendered. He despised the escape, and would have preferred to die there fighting the Japanese. But he was ordered to leave by CINC, and thus could not disobey. Throughout the war thereafter, MacArthur tortured his staff by frequently approaching the point of contact in his theatre, and coming within inches of fatal fire. There were many in the armed services and the press who intensely disliked MacArthur personally, and nicknamed him "Dugout Doug".

But MacArthur's record as both a military leader and-rare for an American-an administrator of occupied territories, is a treasure of his nation's history, and requires no defense from any quarter.

In the post-war period there have been many assassination attempts on presidents and on presidential candidates (including many successful ones). As a result, the American public has come to expect the occupant of the White House to effectively take orders from the Secret Service's presidential escort detail. Like any bureaucratic organization, they control the president completely on matters of where he goes and when. President Bush, unlike the last occupant of the office, is neither a coward nor a self-serving liar. There is a high probability that his record in the coming struggle against terrorism will require no defense from any quarter.

In other words, he possesses qualities that have become-unfortunately-rare in American presidents...
