Saw Joseph Campbell's excellent series "Myth and Mythology" not long ago and he draws many parallels with most religions including Buddism. He believes Christianity made a turn [along with the other 2 in their own way?] at a specific point to become a religion where one must follow the rules Christ's experience [as interpreted by the various leaders of different sects, which all change the rules to suit their needs] as opposed to trying to replicate his experience in their own lives. I believe there is a German philosopher [name?] who reached the same conclusion at some point.... ie. Christ's assention and return were being taken too literally, and really was happening within.

The upshot being that everyone one of us has god within to search for... everyone could attain Christs experience in their own way.
