Hi CR,

I see from a post on the BR that you watched the Letterman show last night. I hope others here did as well. If not, I'm sure snippets will be played on the news today. It was extraordinarily moving, IMO.

For those who didn't watch, it was Letterman's first live show since the attack. He was somber, shaky. He spoke for about five minutes, saying that, since the attack, he didn't think there was a place for what he does on television and that it was only because of the encouragement, then insistence, of Mayor Ridolph Guiliani that he was continuing. He praised Guiliani as a model of courage.

His first guest was Dan Rather, with whom he spoke of the attack. Rather broke down -- badly-- twice during the interview and they had to cut away. At one point Letterman comforted a visibly shaking Rather by grasping his hand. Rather had great praise for President Bush.

I had another sleepless night and wouldn't be surprised if a number of us did, as nine this morning is going to be a difficult marker. The stress is beginning to gel and set as we wait for information and news of our government's action. Please take extra care of yourselves, your family, friends, and neighbors. People are reacting in all sorts of ways, from anxiety and fear, to oversleep and depression, to rage. We all need comfort and support, no matter how our stress and suffering is manifested.

I'm going to be taking most of the day away from the computer and will see you all all later.

I think Mark Bingham may indeed have done something more than call his mother before the plane crashed. The firemen and policemen at the WTC were heroic, but it looks like there were bigger heroes in the air over Pennsylvania.

A Sky Filled With Chaos, Uncertainty and True Heroism washingtonpost.com

Todd Beamer told the GTE Airfone operator he knew he was going to die, asked her to pray with him and uttered his last, defiant words.

"Are you guys ready?" the operator heard the 32-year-old Beamer ask fellow passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Then he said: "Let's roll." . . .

It was the hijackers' bad luck that they chose a plane with a number of large men on board. Beamer stood 6-foot-1 and weighed 200 pounds. Jeremy Glick, 31, another passenger involved in the apparent revolt, was a college rugby player and judo champion. Mark Bingham, 31, of San Francisco was a 6-foot-4 rugby player.
