The Muslims fundamentalists hide behind the guise of religion. It is a great motivator. But they are after one thing. Temporal power.

Yeah, good points. Underneath all the crap, that is basically what it boils down to. Destabilize and seize power. It's a story we should all be familiar with by now.

We helped the Afghanis get the Soviets out. Now they bite us, or so it seems.

Simplistic and not 100% correct!
You see, Vietnam "defeated" the US with aid from the Soviets aid passed to them through the Chinese. In revenge the US helped Afghanistan to humiliate the Soviets. A number of people seem to be of the mindset that the helping hand of Uncle Sam has all too often been defecated upon by ingrates. Not really. You just have to look at the total picture to certain events have happened as they did. did.

Afghanistan was pro US until the pro US government there was defeated by the Taliban. Then circumstances compelled Bin Laden to operate from Afghanistan.

In the ME, the US is in a catch-22 situation. It is damned because it helps Israel; it will be damned if it leaves her alone. Ditto for the US in a number of other places? Perhaps it might be best for the US to remain isolationist as it was prior to 1941's so-called "Day of Infamy", and let the rest of the world find its equilibrium? I doubt whether that will ever happen largely because of Big Business and you know damn well who are in control of Big Business and the Big Banks. I am not in the least surprised why the WTC was demolished. Sorry if I sound a bit callous about that.
