NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON : Two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade in New York City while another plane smashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC, plunging the United States into unprecedented chaos and panic.
In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m. followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both of the towers of the World Trade Center - one of the world’s tallest buildings -subsequently collapsed while the Pentagon - the heart of the US military machine - was seriously damaged when a third plane crashed into a part of the Pentagon, throwing people off their feet inside the building and setting off a massive fire.
According to airline figures, a total of 266 passengers were involved in the disasters. American Airlines Boeing 767 that had been hijacked after take-off from Boston. American Airlines told reporters that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents," one leaving Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard, and the second leaving Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six
crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles. Loss of life was expected to be catastrophic from the collapse of the giant 110-story towers of the World Trade , which fell in a huge cloud of smoke and fire two hours after the initial impacts. Early details were sketchy, but the New York attacks seemed certain to cause heavy losses of life and many injuries. Almost 3,000 people were admitted to hospitals in New York.
Witnesses reported people jumping from windows in the World Trade Center - which is visited by more than 150,000 people
every day - as it collapsed. Hospitals in New York were overwhelmed with patients as a massive cloud billowed into the blue skies over Manhattan where the city skyline had been dramatically and permanently altered.
It was the most dramatic and deadly attack on the U.S mainland in modern history. The attacks forced the evacuation of all government buildings in Washington, including the White House, State Department, New York Stock Exchange and all federal buildings. Flights were cancelled at all major airports.
