Mary, when it comes to free speech, I usually find little room for compromise.

There is no question that Jerry Falwell's language from last week assigning blame for the WTC attack would be in violation of most campus speech codes. Thank goodness he was allowed to speak freely. Now we know for sure what an absolute horse-like-mammal he is.

Yeah, yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theatre is an example of free speech out of control. There are about a million counter examples why speech shouldn't be restricted. It wasn't too long ago that my grandmother faced charges that she had temerity to actually teach black children English in school. Seems that at the time, a lot of people thought that was similar to yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theatre.

RE:"Let me see if I can suggest some answers:
a) We are a barbaric people.
b) We lack sensitivity
c) We are a backward nation
d) We are illogical - we can't think like good, God fearing people
e) If we all had gun racks on our pick ups - we would be able to think differently
f) Osami Bin Laden would not attend any university with such codes
g) Flight instructors could be hampered if they tried to harass cetain "elements" in their class rooms."
These are just a few starters. "

So what is your point?

RE:"I am sure we can think of more reasons why we are so obstreperous."

Oh please, don't make us look that up...
