Previously unknown, they have been dutifully named after their discoverers although some suggested they should be dubbed, "The Christmas Comets." They have little to do with a holiday associated with loving and giving. It would be more appropriate to call them the "Death Comets," as that is what really follows in the wake of their tails. Throughout history men and nations have looked fearfully upon the appearance of a new comet in the skies -- and with good reason. Time and again comets presage catastrophe and doom, war and or pestilence. The Death Comets are right on time. With the United States poised on the brink of two major wars: against the madman in Baghdad and the madman in Pyongyang, the world is holding its collective breath hoping against hope that the events unfolding over the next four months will not engulf the entire Earth in nuclear conflagration. The United States itself hangs in the balance. Its economy in tatters, the debt has skyrocketed to over $10 trillion when you add Social Security debt in. For all intents and purposes the government of the United States is bankrupt right now. Unemployment is actually headed towards Depression-era levels, but many millions have dropped off the Unemployment Statistics and only those false numbers are released by government agencies. Defaults on mortgages have reached an all time high and so have personal and corporate bankruptcies. The United States has troops now stationed in over 100 countries worldwide and the more it flexes its power the more enemies it creates. America is at varying degrees of war around the world and has been since 1941. Americans are fast losing freedoms and liberties guaranteed them under the Constitution and Bill of Rights, yet a majority of Americans want the government to have more power -- some are openly calling for a dictatorship. The fear in the 1950s was of being taken over by the Communists; the cry in the new millennium is for a fascist government instead. Government propaganda mills (so-called "spin") crank out more disinformation and patriotic sham than the Nazis did during World War II. Of course, it is not surprising, since legions of government bureaucrats and politicians have used the master Nazi propagandists (such as Leni Riefenstahl's cinematic works) and PR as the template for the Americanism of fascist-statist policies which have subverted the vision of our Founding Fathers to an ever greater degree. The comets come and go, adding their grist to the mill. And as men, women and children in small villages and the jungles and deserts look to the skies with wonder, they know the dogs of war are soon to be unleashed. The more sophisticated urbanites, those in the great metropolitan cities dotting the globe, the pinnacles of modern civilization, are too wise and worldly to heed the comets' warning. 'Mere superstitious nonsense,' they smirk. But in the wilderness the ancient ones who listened to the stories of their great grandfathers hear the sounds of approaching war. They hear the drums beat in the night.
