I'm getting confused on who the US consumer is, and what state he is in. No savings, going through layoffs, lost most of their stock investments, not getting any interest on their cash savings, in the middle of a credit bubble, possibly has purchased a too expensive house, has no equity in his house, makes something like $40k for a family of 4 and has leased an SUV.

I'm confused about the whole thing.
