Dear Tim: Intel's flagship P4 or P3 lines do not run at mil-spec temperatures. AMD's flagship Palomino and Tbird lines do run at mil-spec temperatures. So Intel loses the high end x86 mil-spec battle. AMD's flash does run at mil-spec temperatures (they are used in automobile engine control computers which are spec'd even higher than typical military ones). Does Intel's? 76C and 85C are not enough for mil-spec, -40C-90C. They are OK for commercial, 70C-0C. As to 1U servers, the dual Palomino outruns both the dual P3 and the dual Tualatin in typical server loads. And they are cheaper to boot. So the massively parallel systems and robust cluster systems are both cheaper and quicker with Palominos than either of the Intel ones. And soon, they will be even faster yet as >1.5G MPs will be available in a month. Perhaps you should read the data sheets before spouting such fictions. Pete

The jab of which I wrote was the one that went along the lines of "but I hear it's good for gaming". This was a goad. It was a troll. You typed out that footer not because you believe it to be a fact (I do not believe that your intelligence is at the low level of believing that the only strong performance point of the Athlon is in games; on the contrary, I think you are smarter than that). Normally, I wouldn't have commented. I would have simply let it go in the same manner that I ignore such childish attempts at flamebrewing in messages from anyone on this thread. But tensions have been very strongly enflamed over the past week. Something very tragedic happened, many people died, and most people in the stock market are losing money. All three of these put people into a very stressful situation, and I was hoping that conversation could remain somewhat civil. It may be related, but I'm sure that GW Bush is not trying to get on the phone with Bin Laden to convert him to Christianity. Yes, they have opinions on the topic of religion, but their current tiff is not over opinions.
