the Soviet system was doomed anyway, although no-one believed that in '79/'80. the fact remains that in the eagerness to stop the other empire from expanding, our empire has armed and trained people that have now turned into deadly enemies and whose 'democratic credentials' if you want were no better than those of the Soviets. you as a woman would have fared a lot better in an Afghanistan under the goulash-communist Nadshibullah, than under the Taliban or any other Islamic state...had not the Taliban taken Kabul, it would have been another group of Mudjaheddin, and they would have installed a fundamentalist Islamic state as well most likely. this is not to say that i condone the Soviet meddling in Afghanistan. imho all imperial meddling is futile and harmful, no matter who's behind it. who are we to tell other cultures and societies what is good for them, and then go and enforce our do-goodism militarily?

CB, with all due respect that is exactly were I point my finger .......... lack of understanding of the Americans of what is going on in places far away with different cultures........... meaning the Soviets would have never been able to take Pakistan and Afghanistan ......... the Brit's failed at a time they were the only major force in the world.......... they learned a very bloody lesson in Afghanistan and Pakistan mountains ............ few survived to tell the story. As mentioned to Heinz, in all recorded history since Alexander the Great no one installed law and order in those places. Capturing several cities is no evidence of capturing the land in those places
