I don't see how that would help. The arbitrage players would short the futures to get them back down to fair value as they would have an obvious undeserved premium.

If stocks are selling off, someone needs to buy those stocks, not some derivative, in order to stop prices from falling as buying power is otherwise exhausted.

How would buying futures help?
