A long time back I put my wife's entire TIAA/CREF retirement account into inflation-adjusted bonds. That fund has been performing like a stock fund over the last year.

In the other direction, I was horrified to discover that my own state-managed pension fund had abandoned bonds, at long last, over the last five years! They are already doing what some people wanted social security to do. They have lost many billions on Cisco, etc. But the state guarantees me a (somewhat stingy, in terms of what I have put in) pension no matter what happens.
