Haim, i believe the West is aware that a military conflict in the silk road area will be no cake walk.

in the meantime, the reaction of Hamas only underscores what i've been saying: our effort to now go in and punish the terrorists will only strengthen their resolve, and produce more hatred. our security, instead of being enhanced, will be diminished.

i agree with your perception of Europe up to a point, especially France fits this mould imo.
otoh, European politicians, while of course expressing solidarity with the US and pledging their support, are a bit worried that the conflict might get out of hand, and that they might not be consulted on the steps that are being taken. that was imo the main reason for invoking NATO's article 5: the non-US partners to the treaty want to have a say in the proceedings.
