Tish: TSC: What about the criticism that Nokia is late with its GPRS [General Packet Radio Service] , or 2.5G, phones?

Bernier: It'd be nice to be first to market, but look at it this way: If you've got a lead 10 yards into the 100-yard dash, I don't think anybody cares. It's not who's leading at the 10-, 20- or 30-yard marker; it's who wins. <<

Nokia (NOK) was up 8.7% in preopen trading, the most active stock on the Instinet ECN, after HSBC upgraded the stock to add from hold.

HSBC also cut its rating on mobile-phone rival Ericsson (ERICY) to reduce from hold. Ericsson was unchanged.

French telecom equipment maker Alcatel (ALA) was also on the rise in preopen trading, up 5.1%.

Alcatel said Tuesday it signed a multimillion-euro contract to supply routers to expand Belgacom's national high-speed telecommunications network. Belgacom is owned by the Belgian government and ADSB Communications. <<
