It is an argument made by a demagogue. 5000 people have been murdered, and the evils committed by Bin Laden are downplayed, to score political points against Falwell.

Falwell may be silly and stupid, a hypocrite and ill-spoken,
and a poor spokesman for Christianity, but he is not evil.
I'll echo DavesM here. bin Laden (presuming indeed he is
behind the WTC destruction) is evil. The murder of
thousands of innocents just cannot be excused, atoned for,
forgiven. The embarrassment of being rebuked by a
(Republican!) White House was enough to convince Rev.
Falwell to apologise (and one can imagine how it pained
him), and that is probably enough penance for this
particular transgression.

Indeed. The evil among us are those who vandalize Arab-owned
businesses, organize mobs to storm Mosques, and assault,
injure (and even murder) our own citizens for the reason
that they appear to be Arabic. Falwell is not one these,
nor could I imagine him encouraging or defending any such.

If only.
