I agree with you about the WTC being a target for both symbolic and practical reasons. The practical reasons include the fact that it was possible to cause a lot of destruction by aiming at such a target (many other targets would cause less death and destruction although hitting a packed domed stadium might have killed more people).

The financial industry is an important industry in the US but hitting it hard doesn't reduce our ability to wage war. Its not like the German factories that were pouring out weapons, and weapon materials that were directly contributing to the war effort.
