It's the difference between that which creates and that which is the Creator. The Universe existed before the Earth existed, and the Earth existed before man existed. It's likely, but we'll never know for sure, that the Earth will exist after man no longer exists, and that the Universe will exist after the Earth no longer exists.

Existence is the funniest thing, in my opinion. You can say - some do - that God does not exist. In that case, either the Universe created itself, or the Universe always existed.

But then, where did the Universe come from?

But if God created the Universe, where did God come from?

It's really a cosmic joke. Sort of like, which came first, the chicken or the egg?

To which Jay, I suppose, like Alexander cutting the Gordian knot, would say, "just is."

At any rate, if you think the joke is funny, then you can't take very much seriously.;^)

No one comes to the Father except through me

This positioning is probably one of the largest objections I have to various flavors of Christianity. I repeatedly reply to those who wish to save me, that I cannot accept a religion that would condemn Jews, Buddhists, and possibly Islamic people.

That said, Jesus did much in his life that makes him worthy of understanding. And I'd be happy to have him as a friend and co conspirator- crazy or not as perceived by others.

Hi KMT,
Many Christians would love other religions to be true and many paths to lead to God. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on one's perspective) Christians follow a God who reserves His glory for Himself. Christ said, "I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." He didn't leave His followers any other alternatives

I'm no religious scholar. I've been schooled by nun's in a mission school whose views were quite pragmatic in retrospect, and I guess might even be construed as heretical :o), and by Jesuits in high school. Maybe it was the times, 60's and early 70's, but I was never burdened by a rigid interpretation of my faith. Truthfully No one comes to the Father except through me to me even this is open to interpretation and I may not be a good Catholic in the dogmatic sense. I believe that this means 'do as I do', not 'fall down and worship me'. Or emulating his life to the best of your ability is the way to truth. Again a divergence between The old and the new, supplication as opposed to emulation.

I reiterate that the "Myth and Mythology' series by Joseph Cambell is an excellent watch. He points out many instances in Biblical readings that leave open the possibility of having Christ's experience.

Islam has no problem regarding Jesus as a regular prophet. There are a lot of those guys around..... I have no problem regarding him as a rather charismatic preacher...whose followers were so excited they rather got carried away in the stories they told about him.

David [named for the true Messiah :) ]

Actually, I think some people on this thread are objecting to this discussion. It started as a discussion of how the West sees Islam and how non-Christians view the West and Christianity. This has a lot of relevance to the current situation. But I don't think we want an argument about which religion is true.
