Sprint to use Java in 3G phones
Sprint PCS (PCS) will base applications for third-generation cell phones on the Java programming language when it launches its network in mid-2002. The 3G networks promise high-speed, always-on Web access and high-quality video and audio. Nearly all vendors except Microsoft (MSFT) have committed to Sun Micro’s (SUNW) Java for wireless applications and devices.

XM and Sirius win radio licenses
The FCC OK’d temporary licenses for the two satellite radio firms to use ground-based repeaters that expand the reach of their new digital radio services for vehicles. XM (XMSR) and Sirius (SIRI) plan launches this year. General Motors (GM) plans to offer XM in 20 models in 2003. Wireless operators fear that the ground-based repeaters will interfere with their airwaves.
