Thanks Jill, You have done a fine job of expressing the tension between conflicting interests. I have a few friends in law enforcement and we talk often about the ever present conflicts of protecting our lives and property from criminals, and still preserving our basic human rights. And by that, our own humanity.

I think we share the sentiment that our enemies have lost their humanity in targeting noncombatants. It is important that we not lose ours in the fight. It is gut wrenching to hear the stories from our veterans about the ugliness of war.

I believe this is why we must be intelligent in exactly what we ask of our young sons and daughters to do in our behalf. In other venues the word "traitor" has been bantered about. I think it is dangerous. "Loyal Opposition" is vital to our democracy. Unfortuately, I often see "partisan poloticing" cloaking itself in the 1st amendment.

Fox has Bush on screen with the Prime Minister of Indoneia. I'd like to see more of that. I want to see leaders of the Muslin world stepping up to the plate and joining us.

Be well,

D.H.

Jill,

I missed this thought provoking post yesterday. A lot of what you say is true. Very especially the part about dark side of America. It is a sad, an evil necessity...and to assume that this tragedy is going to change US and make it act differently than it has been acting in the past, is wishful thinking at the most. There is a price this country has to pay for its status as a SuperPower.

My belief is that Arabs were at worst a bunch of silly people, emerging from centuries of poverty and illiteracy with the discovery of oil. A bunch of boys with exciting toys they could afford by virtue of their new found wealth. If left alone to play with those toys, they could never have been able to comprehend the possibility of such a plan.

Nothing puts the NYC tragedy in perspective as this chilling quote

"As a volunteer in the war that the Islamic rebels of Afghanistan fought against the Soviets in the 1980s, bin Laden had a front-row seat at an astonishing and empowering development: the defeat of a superpower by a gaggle of makeshift militias. Though the U.S., with billions of dollars in aid, helped the militias in their triumph, bin Laden soon turned on their benefactor. "

<See : Message 16376356;

The opinions to strengthen CIA once again sadden me. Isn't it the same agency which, by its covert acts, caused this fiasco in the first place ? American Govt must realise that now with the communism gone, the threat to its sovernity is almost gone. It should realiise terrorism will never work, should not be allowed to work. We do not live in an isolated world and the ripples of what happens elsewhere will be felt here. If terrorism is not rooted out in totallity, if it is supported, or allowed to foster anywhere in the world, be it in Pakistan, China, India, Afghanistan, Iraq...anywhere, however remote, sooner or later it will always find its way here.

In the long term, these are some soul searching questions for our govt. Meanwhile, the only way out of the hole is thru empathy, aid and education....to help rebuild the lives of the people and restore hope and peace in THEIR lives...
