I see you earned a "Cool Post of the Day". However, your facts concerning SUV's and the CAFE law are wrong. You said, "The problem is political because the gas-guzzling SUVs don't count in the calculation of corporate fuel efficiency. They are deemed trucks to which the regulatory standards do not apply.

The minimum mileage requirement for SUVs is 20.7 mpg. They are not exempt as you claim.

Here's an interesting counter-view point for you. "But as cars have shrunk, the death toll has grown. In 1999, USA Today analyzed government crash data and found that in the 25 years since fuel-efficiency standards were first imposed, 46,000 people had died in crashes they would have survived if they had been driving bigger cars. Small cars -- those no larger than a Chevy Cavalier or Dodge Neon -- accounted for 18 percent of all vehicles on the road, the paper found, but they were responsible for 37 percent of automobile fatalities. Not root of problem.
1. people often pull boats or trailers with them and can't afford 2 vehicles.
2. use by disabled.
3. people buy personal safety of larger vehicle. perhaps you don't fear jousting with semi in your Honda Civic (?)
4. 19 mpg on highway is not a gas hog by my definition.
5. people in rural areas need 4wd for snow.
