Just flew back from Germany to Austin. Security was an order of magnitude higher in Germany than it was at Newark where we connected for Austin. It took a full 3 hours to get through all the checks in Germany. I really didn't see any difference in the US than it was prior to 9/11 except they had more guns standing around.

In Germany they opened all luggage. I had to leave a polaroid camera in Germany because I couldn't find the batteries they wanted me to take out. I think the battery is in the film actually, but I didn't think of it at the time. Then we went through 2 sets of metal detectors and 2 wand scans. They took my plastic razor away at the second check.

At Newark they didn't open any luggage. One metal detector screen. We were at the gate an hour early. More people around but overall not much different. Got held over one night in Newark since Continnental cancelled our Sunday flight to Austin.
Lots of people in hotel had been there since Wednesday. About 20 people in coach on both legs of the trip. Impression most were like us and completeing a trip that had been started before 9/11.

The day after we got home Continental announced they were discontinuing the Newark to Dusseldorf flight that we had taken. Just glad to be home.
