Favorite Niven/Pournelle book was Lucifer's Hammer.
THe first time I started reading that, I didn't like it and quit after a few chapters. Some years later I tried it again- -and thought it was great! Mood, maybe.

I think Niven's stuff was short stories as I recall. (I think it ws Niven.) And not part of the Known Space series. I remember one about a guy who had gotten hold of a "virus" from a lab that would it through steel. He applied it to the suspension cables of a bridge. A few days later.....
