Yeah, no sense in allowing US investors to do things like reduce the risk of their portfolio in the face of a higher probability of recession.

Better to force US stockholders to stand pat and let foreign investors make money.

Seriously, Japan has already tried that 'be loyal and hold stocks' thing. All it does is extend the time that there's pain. The market is going to get to the level that it wants to regardless of any patriotism people ascribe to owning stocks. In the meantime, if anyone is selling, I can't hold it against them.

Tell me, if you had a friend who works at an airline and is looking at a very high probability of a layoff, could you blame that person if he wanted to sell some stocks so that he could be a lot more liquid in the face of unemployment?
