hey tekboy just curious--don't you think janes is a great publication? i've always admired them. & i've read stuff there that should & doesn't make it to major media.

not to say your basic point isn't really good--some of our journalism is kind of like all the false bomb threats since last Tuesday--

I mostly agree with your assessment of the media, Tek. A lot of rumor and speculation and official press releases are passed off as news.

I observed it get markedly worse in the Gulf War. It's somewhat forgivable there, because the military tightly controlled press access to information.

In swaying US opinion towards war, in advance, a PR firm was hired to dish up scenes of hospitalized Kuwaiti babies in harm's way because of the Iraqis. It was later determined this was BS. The media failed to uncover the ruse. Even the 'reputable' media failed.... until we were embroiled in it.

As you say, scrutinize the media carefully. There's an old saying in journalism circles: "If your mother says she loves you.... verify it."

With the record of our wartime press, and the capability to arouse outrage via eMail with 'urban myths', not to mention the possibilities of fakery via video animation, I'm thinking that old canard needs an update: If your mother says she loves you.... shoot her; she's lying."
