Stocks rallied late in the session, the DJIA coming back to finish with well less than half of its earlier 400 point deficit. The Nasdaq finished off almost 30 points. Traders still fear the effects of the threat of a so-called "holy war" on the United States even as they struggle to come to grips with the effects of last weeks attacks. other news and rumor from the tumultuos Middle East has also been concerning traders as he fallout continues. Traders fear the prospect of further violence and the potential for recession, darkening the mood on the trading floors in spite of the sense of many analysts that the markets are deeply oversold. Companies continue to feel the pain, particularly in the airline and insurance sectors, and numbers revealing the financial damage are just starting to trickle in.
