Heinz I posted similar reports from the Telegraph in the UK, and in the post you responded I wrote

Murky waters --- Pakistan is allied with China and a foe of India and Iran

The area is so divided between the various tribes that a concensus is very difficult to achieve. Pakistan wants the US on it's side against India and to gain supremacy over Iran his other foe.

I am not sure about the countries to the north on the silk road like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan etc. The other power keg is around the Caspian Sea.

Keep in mind that every swat of land and it's people there have scores of grievences to settle with each other. Their memories span generations not years. The ME in this respect is a walk in the park.

Several years ago I had a meeting at the US Energy and State Department ------ that area was on their priority list ...... but for some reason their attitude changed in year 1999 to 2000
