Yes there is reason for it to rise. The future is not as grim and hopeless as it currently appears. The market is about the future, not the present.

There's no particular reason for further falls either, though. Everybody knows, and has known for quite some time, that earnings will suck for a while. And I can't imagine anybody not knowing about the World Trade Center and its likely impact on consumer confidence, etc. So those factors are, almost by definition, already priced into the market.

Now it's margin calls and momentum investors, until that works its way through.
