I don't think a Salt March to Afganistan or Iraq or wherever the footprints lead would deter that crowd

Every problem has its unique bad / worse/worst / good/ better/ best solution(s).

The past is just a guideline. we need the genius of man (woman) today to come up with good if not the best solutions. So the question to ask of any proposed solution is "is this the best solution?" and then go with it. history will tell us if it was in fact the best solution.

a colonial nation which did have something of a sense of morality,
It may be that Islam and even the terrorists had a sense of morality, but it was one which we either could not connect with, or would not want to connect with. In some cases there is no way to join in the morality unless one is born to it. In others specific belief completely trumps actions or intentions. International morality will have to take a back seat to international law if we ever want to get to a postion where what you do is more important than why you do it.

OT: Britain left behind the framework of a democratic society, a first-rate Indian Civil Service, the world's largest rail system--and, not to belittle it--the English language, the only means of communication throughout the land.

Yes to all of the above. IMO, one very big aspect that went wrong was the separation of the country. No point in trying to point the finger at anyone now - its history, and people will learn to live with it in peace (eventually, I hope).
