I agree with some of what you say. Longs have been weakened financially and are probably more cautious than they used to be. Shorts have lots of equity, so can push harder. And there are people who play "momentum," so the down trend seems meaningful to them and can become a self-fullfilling prophecy.

But it's like the old saying. The stock market is where, when they put things on sale, nobody wants to buy. That's why it's so hard to buy low, which is an important component in that other old saying -- buy low and sell high.

Not everybody is decimated; I think there's an incredible amount of cash on the sidelines. As you say, unexpected good news (and how long can the bad news continue?) could have a big effect with the spring wound this tight. No reason we have to test the lows rather than the highs. <g>
